The History of Blended Earth

While growing grass has always been my passion, growing other things is a close second. Most people in the agriculture business like to grow things and most of us pay as much attention to the roots and what’s below the surface as what is on top. Mushroom compost has always offered a tremendous growing medium to gardeners as it offers a host of nutrients with multiple crop/seasons staying power.

The main drawbacks being access to the product coupled with the difficult task of breaking it up into smaller bits to become plant available. It doesn’t seem to matter how much you rototill mushroom compost; it only gets so small.

We inherited a recipe and process for making mushroom compost more plant accessible and through trial and error, we have improved both the recipe and process to bring Blended Earth to the market. For many years we have been delivering Blended Earth to the local Columbia, SC area master gardeners, landscape contractors, homeowners, and golf courses. It is with great enthusiasm that we now take a leap and begin large scale production in an effort to get more product into more people’s hands.

What The People Say

We started using Blended Earth on high traffic areas around greens and weak areas in fairways. We’ve been very impressed with the recovery these areas have exhibited throughout the process. Blended Earth will be in our tee and fairway aerification program in years to come.

The United Way of Kershaw County has eight community gardens throughout the county. These gardens are volunteer run and all the food grown is donated to the local community. Our goal is to provide access to healthy, fresh vegetables to everyone. We began using Blended Earth Soil for our community gardens in the late summer planting season of 2023, and I must say, it has exceeded all my expectations. The staff at Modern Turf have been wonderful helping us with calculating how much soil we need for each of our 8 community garden locations. The delivery team is amazing at getting the large loads of soil right where we need them. They have even allowed us to sell bagged soil to help fund our program.
